Blog # 8

I have not participated in any type o library instruction at all. But I do remember I do a volunteer work at the library and one of my teachers asks me to provide instruction in the media center. The media center has books, DVD’s, and TV. In orientation I explain what they can on books, cds, DVDs, and newspaper.  You can spread words out by giving out flyers, social net, and word of mouths.  I work in the counseling office and I interact with a lot of students daily. It will be really helpful for the students to know that they can access materials and information. Some students rather use Internet search engine to search about people and information that require them to do an assignment. It is fast and easy because you don’t have to type in all this information just to get to the online databases. I feel that the librarian need to give out more workshops and also posting flyer around the campus to let the students aware of what is going on .
The librarian should provide information on the library home page, which way the students will know what is happening at the campus. Most of the students are not aware of what happening at the campus because there is no flyers, not even any enough any information provide. So the students don’t know what is being offer at the college. The library has a lot to offer to the students if we would just take our time to offer workshops. Some students might not know if there is a media center at the library.  I feel students should know how to find most information on the computer because everything is being provided if we should just take the time to explore the option of using the library computers. Enter the information into the computer is very easy, but when trying to find the books on the shelves it make it harder for the patrons to search for.

I think the library should have workshop once a week, have accessible materials available online to the patrons.

Project # 2

Project 2: Proposal to create Reference Library
I am proposing to build an elementary school library at Mary Butler in Long Beach, CA
This school. Mary Butler Elementary School is located in Long Beach, CA and is one of 96 schools in Long Beach Unified School District. It is a public school that serves 619 students in grades K-8. As of 2011, Mary Butler Elementary School performance rating is 3 out of 10 test rating. Mary Butler Elementary School's 2011 base score was 651 and the school did meet its 2011 school-wide growth target. Students Enrollment (2010) Total: 619 47% 52%
Student Economic Level (2010)
In 2010, Mary Butler Elementary School had 92% of students eligible for free or reduced price lunch programs. California had 52% of eligible students for free or reduced price lunch programs. Eligibility for the National School Lunch Program is based on family income levels.
Student Ethnicity (2010)
Hispanic: 50%
Asian/Pacific Islander: 30%
Black: 17%
White: 1 %

Population Growth: Population in Long Beach stayed
Roughly constant at 462,000 over the past ten years. The
Hispanic population increased by more than 23,000 (14%),
While the white, non-Hispanic population declined by 17,000

Diversity: The racial and ethnic composition of Long Beach
Has shifted over the past ten years with the Hispanic share
Increasing from 36% to 41% and the white, non-Hispanic
Share falling from 33% to 29%.
Age Structure: Long Beach is slightly younger than California overall, with a median
Age of 33, up from 31 in 2000 yet still lower than the state median of 35 years old. The
Rise in median age is due to a decrease in the number of young people, whose share of
Population declined from 32% to 28% of total. The share of population age 65+ stayed
Constant at 9% of total, compared with 11% statewide.
Households: Long Beach has a much smaller share of family households, at 61%, than
The statewide rate of 69%, and a much larger share of single-person households (28%)
Than the state (23%). Among people age 65+, 29% live alone, slightly higher than the
Statewide rate of 25%.

There are currently 12 libraries located within 10 miles of Mary Butler Elementary School and 1 of them is within 2 miles. However, it is not always possible for an elementary student to travel that distance to visit a library. The closest library is the Signal Hill Library in the city of Signal Hill, CA
Library Center is the main library in Long Beach, CA. This is a full-service library but is located over 5 miles from the school. It offers a media center; children’s library; general information services; business, science and technology; government publications; visual and performing arts; special collections; exhibits; a talking book center; and more http://www.lbpl.org/?vm=r&s=1These are the things that would be important to access in a school library.
 My school library would included
 Programs
The Family Learning Center provides homework assistance for students in grades K - 8. Parents are encouraged to use the library with their children. The center is staffed with homework helpers to provide help with homework assignments and computer instruction.
The Main Library offers story times, events, and programs.
Facilities
Meeting room, auditorium and auditorium lobbies are available for rent. Book drops are located on the walls of the library east of the main entrance, on the walkway between the Library and City Hall, and on Ocean Blvd (drive-up).
Equipment/Technology
Computers: The Main Library offers computers with internet access, Microsoft Office, various databases, and the library catalog. A library card is needed to use the library computers, except for the catalog-only computers. Access is on a first come basis and is limited to 2 hours per day.
Wireless: The Main Library offers free wireless internet access throughout the library. A valid library card is required.
Printers and photocopiers: Public printers and photocopiers are available. Black and white copies are $.5 per page; Color copies are $.25 per page.
Typewriter: A self-serve typewriter is available free of charge

The most popular electronic resources at Long Beach Main Public Library are the DVDs and e-books. Patrons come into the library to check out the new DVD releases while patrons at home would use the online catalog to research e-books provided. To check out DVDs, there is a price for certain days and the amount changes depending on how new the DVD is. The reference area of the library is placed smack dab in the middle of the top floor of this two stories high library building. The reference area is quite large full of book cases and a circular desk/bookcase where the reference librarians would sit and offer help. The book cases are back to back full of different reference books It would include a younger reference area for the students in Pre-K through 8th  grade with picture dictionaries and encyclopedias. There would be a reference section with bilingual dictionaries, almanacs, yearbooks, and encyclopedias. There would be tutors available to help students after school each day. There would be electronic reference sources available such as ERIC, World Fact book, ProQuest, Fed Stats, Facts on File, Bartley, Enclopaedia, and  Info Please. I would have my staffs monitored social networking and blogging. This site is not age appropriate for the younger students. My school library does not have to be very big; it just has to have dedicated staff and students to fulfill Mary Butler Elementary School’s vision of success.
